Police register case, EC seeks report on Sakshi Maharaj's remarks

New Delhi : The Election Commission on Saturday sought a report from the Uttar Pradesh administration while police registered a case against BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj for his speech in which he allegedly blamed the Muslims for India's population boom.

The Unnao MP's speech at a religious gathering at Meerut in the poll-bound state attracted widespread condemnation while his own party distanced itself from his remarks.

Mulayam, Akhilesh stick to their guns as SP truce talks fail

Lucknow : Attempts for a peace deal between warring factions in the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) of Uttar Pradesh have come to a naught as both sides on Saturday signalled that chances of any truce were now almost over.

According to party sources, both factions -- led by Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav -- will now be contesting the forthcoming state assembly polls on different party symbols, irrespective of who gets the official symbol of the party, the cycle.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind voices concern over SC judgment

New Delhi : Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) on Saturday voiced concern over the Supreme Court judgment that banned the use of religion and caste to seek votes and claimed the order can be "misused".

On January 2, a seven-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court said that religion, race, caste, community or language will not be allowed to be misused in elections and that the election of an elected representative will be declared null and void if votes are sought on such considerations.
