Telangana announces Rs5 crore, Andhra Rs 3 crore for Sindhu

Hyderabad/Vijayawada : Telangana and Andhra Pradesh vied with each other on Saturday to shower cash prizes on badminton star P.V. Sindhu, a day after she created history by winning silver at the Rio Olympics.

Telangana, the home state of the champion player, and Andhra Pradesh, the state which her parents come from, both claimed credit for Sindhu's success.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday evening announced a cash award of Rs 5 crore for the 21-year-old, hours after his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N. Chandrababu Naidu declared Rs 3 crore.


UP announces Rani Laxmi Bai award for Sakshi Malik

Lucknow : The Uttar Pradesh government will honour Sakshi Malik, the first woman Indian wrestler to win a medal in Olympics, with the coveted Rani Laxmi Bai award.

This was announced by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday at a Raksha Bandhan ceremony in the state capital. He said Sakshi has made the nation proud by winning bronze at the Rio Olympics.

Akhilesh said: "I, on behalf of the state of Uttar Pradesh, congratulate her on this momentous occasion."

Racing car developed by AMU students judged 31st best in the world

Aligarh : A formula racing car prepared by the 22-member engineering student team of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has been judged as the 31st best in the world in the cost and manufacturing category.

The student’s team, lead by Captain Arpit Upadhyay was in the United Kingdom to display its manufactured Formula car at the “Formula Student 2016 competition” held at London. The students’ delegation returned from London event on Sunday.

Sports Minister visits hockey legend Mohammad Shahid in a hospital

New Delhi: Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel on Wednesday paid a visit to ailing hockey legend Mohammad Shahid who is undergoing treatment for a liver and kidney ailment at a private hospital in Gurgaon.

The 56-year-old legend was admitted to Medanta - the Medicity earlier this month after a bout of jaundice and dengue made his condition worse. He was airlifted from Varanasi.

Lucknow to host junior men's hockey World Cup in December

New Delhi : Sixteen countries will clash in the men's junior World Cup in Lucknow from December 8 to 18, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced on Tuesday.

Besides hosts India, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, England, Germany, Japan, South Korea, the Netherlands, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan and Spain will vie for the top honours.

The women's junior World Cup will take place in Santiago, Chile, from November 24 to December 4.

Tributes pour in for 'Greatest' Muhammed Ali

New Delhi : Former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson was joined by several other sporting greats in paying tributes to boxing legend Muhammed Ali, who breathed his last after a 32-year battle with Parkinson's disease in Arizona.

Ali, 74, who had been hospitalised in Phoenix, Arizona earlier this week, passed away following respiratory problems.

Nagpur cricketer Faiz Fazal to debut for India during the Zimbabwe tour
