Muslim religious preacher nabbed in Kerala for advising against breast milk

Kozhikode ( Kerala) : After the arrest of a newborn's father, Kerala Police took a Muslim religious preacher into custody early on Saturday for advising against breast milk for a child until the fifth azan call.

The arrest took place after a mother, despite repeated persuasions by the doctor and paramedical staff, refused to breast feed her second child following the delivery on Wednesday at 1.30 p.m. due to religious reasons.

Government will not waver on triple talaq issue: Amit Shah

Panaji : The Narendra Modi government will not waver on the issue of women's equality and its firm commitment on the issue can be seen by its position on the triple talaq issue, BJP President Amit Shah said on Friday.

"When it came to the triple talaq issue, our government did not dither or hesitate because all women in our country, irrespective of their religion, have been given rights under the Constitution," Shah said at the India Ideas Conclave at a resort in south Goa's Canacona town, 90 km from Panaji.

Bengal Muslim groups oppose doing away with triple talaq

Kolkata : A forum of Muslim organisations in West Bengal on Thursday opposed any interference by the government in matters of religious practices, including the triple talaq, saying it was a subject governed by personal law.

The newly-formed forum, comprising 40 religious organisations, also said it will hold a public meeting on November 8 here to press for its several demands including higher honorarium to Imams and muezzins. 1

Ban Triple Talaq immediately: Women's group

New Delhi : A women's organisation on Wednesday demanded an immediate ban on Triple Talaq since "it is not prescribed in the Quran".

The National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) also said that there was a design to push forward a Hindu agenda and that orthodox elements in all religions were coming together to deny women equal status.

"Triple Talaq in one sitting should be abolished with immediate effect. It is not prescribed in Quran. Anyone pronouncing or supporting it should be treated as instigating domestic violence," NFIW President Noor Zaheer told the media here.

Women have the highest status in Islam: Former CEC

New Delhi: Women have the highest status in Islam and the Muslim community must see things with a liberal interpretation now, former Chief Election Commissioner of India S.Y. Quraishi said on Thursday.

Speaking in the backdrop of the ongoing debate about Triple Talaq, Quraishi said: "Muslim women have the highest status in Islam and no other religion has such concept of equality."

Women safe under Shariah laws: Muslim women activists

New Delhi: Several women activists and female members of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Thursday insisted that Muslim women are safe under the Shariah laws and there is no need for the government to meddle in their affairs.

"We, the Muslim women from various walks of life, schools of thought and organisations, want to make it clear that the Muslim women are safe and secure under the Muslim Personal Law," Asma Zehra, executive member of the AIMPLB told reporters here.

Woman set on fire over enmity

Tikamgarh (Madhya Pradesh): Three men tried to kill a 50-year-old woman by burning her alive over old enmity in Madhya Pradesh's Tikamgarh district. The condition of the woman is critical, police said on Wednesday.

According to police, the incident occurred on Tuesday night at Mojan village under the jurisdiction of Prithvipur police station when the men entered Rajan Bai Yadav's house and set her on fire after dousing her with inflammable substance. They fled the spot.

The condition of the woman is critical and she has been sent to Jhansi for treatment.
